Do Mattress Retailers Need Webhooks for Catalog Updates?

Keeping a mattress catalog up to date isn’t a one-time job. Manufacturers introduce new models, change prices and product statuses, update existing information, and discontinue older products throughout the year. A mattress webhook can help your system manage those changes, but whether you need one depends on how you update your catalog today.

How does your business learn that a mattress model has changed? Does an employee check manufacturer websites, portals, and emails, or does your software look for updates on a schedule? In some cases, your team may not find a change until a shopper sees an outdated price or tries to purchase a discontinued model.

Manual reviews and scheduled checks may be manageable for a small catalog. They get harder to maintain when you carry hundreds of models from several manufacturers, each on its own schedule. Looking at where those updates come from and how much work it takes to find them can help you decide whether webhooks belong in your catalog workflow.

Review How Your Catalog Gets Updated

Before deciding whether webhooks would help, look at how your team handles product updates today. Manufacturers may share changes through emails, manufacturer websites, spreadsheets, product feeds, or account representatives.

For each update, consider:

  • Where does your team find it? Staff may need to check several different sources.

  • How quickly do they find it? Some changes may sit unnoticed until the next review.

  • Who updates the catalog? One employee or several teams may be involved.

  • Which systems need the new data? The change may need to reach your website, Point of Sale (POS) system, and other connected tools.

If your team checks several sources or updates the same information in multiple places, changes can easily be delayed or missed. That’s when manual checking starts becoming harder to manage.

When Catalog Checks Pile Up

Manual checks may work for a small catalog. As you add more models and manufacturers, your team has more websites, emails, and files to review, even when nothing has changed.

The more sources your team reviews, the easier it is to miss an important update. A price may remain outdated, a discontinued mattress may stay online, or your website and in-store systems may show different information.

If manual checking is creating too much work for your team, it may be time for a different approach. A mattress webhook can deliver supported product updates to your system when they’re available, so your staff doesn’t have to keep checking every source.

How Mattress Webhooks Work

Once you connect a mattress webhook to your catalog, your integration receives supported changes after the new data is processed and available. Each supported data update follows a simple path:

  1. A manufacturer updates its product information.

  2. The product data provider detects and processes the change through its data pipeline.

  3. Once the product data provider has the updated information, it triggers a supported webhook event.

  4. The webhook sends the updated information to your registered endpoint.

  5. Your system processes the update based on your own business rules.

Consider the Serta Five Star 14-inch Firm Twin XL mattress, model 5009400211020. Suppose Serta changes the model’s status to discontinued while your store still has a few units available. Once the product data provider processes the change, the webhook sends the updated status to your system. Instead of removing the mattress immediately, your system can flag it for review.

You can then check the remaining inventory and decide whether to keep selling those units, mark the mattress unavailable, or remove the listing. The update arrives automatically, but your business still controls the final action.

Decide What Happens After an Update

Receiving an update doesn’t mean it must appear on your website immediately. Your business decides how each mattress change moves through its workflow.

Your system can:

  • Publish new products: Add a model or size when its information is complete.

  • Update connected systems: Send current data to your website, POS system, or other tools.

  • Send changes for review: Let your team check pricing, images, product status, or inventory before publishing.

  • Update outdated listings: Hide discontinued products, mark them unavailable, or show a replacement model.

Some changes can happen automatically, while others can wait for your team’s approval. This flexibility becomes more valuable as your mattress catalog grows.

Does Your Mattress Catalog Need a Webhook?

Not every mattress retailer needs a webhook. If you carry a small catalog and product changes are infrequent, manual reviews or scheduled checks may still work.

Webhooks become more useful when you carry several brands, manage hundreds of models, or check multiple websites, emails, and files for updates. They can also help when new models or discontinued products reach your system too late, or when your website and in-store systems display different information.

Webhooks don’t remove every catalog task or replace the Application Programming Interface (API). They deliver supported updates when they become available, while the API provides any additional product information your system needs.

If you decide a webhook is right for your mattress catalog, Skulytics can support that workflow. Skulytics is a product data platform that provides structured information from multiple mattress manufacturers through its Product Data API. Skulytics Webhooks deliver supported updates when that information changes. Contact the Skulytics sales team to discuss your mattress catalog and update process.
